What is the postage for a slightly oversized birthday card? how much more than 42cents?

If it's only slightly bigger than your average card it may not be extra. I have sent a few with a regular stamp and they weren't returned. You should go to the post office or the UPS store and ask them if there is any extra charge so it'll get there on time and you won't have to worry.
