Details of irc sec 451(e). how long can I defer recognition of the gain?

I am trying to find out how long I have to defer recognition of gain on sale of livestock due to drought. IRC code sec 451 (e) gives me the mechanics of how to defer recognition, but it does not tell me how long I can defer before I have to recognize the gain.
